Today we woke up with a purpose, and that purpose was Provence.
We managed to all get to the hotel breakfast, then loaded the car for a 2 hour drive from the coast to Gordes. If a rock quarry could produce any beautiful city atop a mountain, this was it. You can tell by the cars parked on the side of the road to take photos that the background was worth the pause, and the remnants of a civilization that created such a city was worth the visit.
After finding parking we found a toilet, then some ice cream since it was so HOT. Best thing about the first stop was the bathroom, and it was well equipped with a baby changing table which was NEEDED for our fussy baby. We walked around a picked up a couple outfits for our photos the next day (more to come on that). Then Greg was determined to show us why the city was worth the trip out there. He didn’t have to do much, as the kids enjoyed the hike. Because of all the cobblestones and Diane’s impending nap time, I stayed back in the shade.
The kids had lots of questions. Trent kept on asking “what happened here” and Perla wanted to see inside the castle. My mind started turning around what we could show the kids on our upcoming stops, to add perspective on what they were seeing and registering for European history. Perla asked if there were any nuclear bombs on the area…which we could clarify the answer was NO but it started the conversation on what bombs where and what we could expect for the rest of the trip in Europe. Bottomline, there were wars and bombs that changed everything we were going to look at, and we were there to appreciate what was left.
Greg drove back and we had reservations at a local restaurant that seemed to be the BUZZ about the town. You didn’t need to dress nice or anything, but you at least needed a reservation. We had a great table, Perla ate a pizza shaped as Mickey Mouse, and Trent ate a cheeseburger with a fork. Greg and I shared a César salad and gnocci. We then declared from heron we’ll document all meals and capture the kids meal sections. This is only a reflection of European culture vs American…they have a LOT of restaurants with options for kids. And we wanted ours to take advantage of ALL of them!
